Without gender difference, there could not be divinity. The Lord told Adam in the beginning that he was to have a helpmeet, which is a companion suited to us. A helpmeet walks side by side, not in front or behind. The result of a helpmeet is a completely equal partnership between husband and wife. Spouses should enter into marriage with the knowledge of each others equality. They should be convinced of it without doubting. The first words after God married Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden was Adam's declaration of Eve's quality with him. He said in Genesis 2:24 that they would be "one flesh."
President Packer has stated that "In the church there is a distinct line of authority. We serve where called by those who preside over us. In the home it is a partnership with husband and wife equally yoked together, sharing in decisions, always working together."
Research has shown that couples who have equal partnerships actually have happier relationships, better individual well-being, more effective parenting practices, and better-functioning children.
